Vice Mayor Manuel "Manny" Avila was elected to the Huntington Park City Council on March 7, 2017. Council Member Avila was born in Mexico City but has been a resident of Huntington Park since 1968. He and his wife of 52 years have been part of the Huntington Park community for over 40 years. They raised their three children in Huntington Park and have dedicated their lives in giving back to the community that has been home to them for decades.
At the March 21, 2019 reorganization, he was selected by his peers to serve as Vice Mayor for the 2019-2020 term.
Vice Mayor Avila always worked hard to achieve the American Dream. He started his work experience in the City of Vernon Factories where he was a union member of the Steelworkers of America Local 7100 for over 25 years. He served as the Financial Secretary for over 13 years within the Steelworkers union, one of his greatest accomplishments. Manuel has always seen the importance of education. In Mexico, he obtained his high school diploma, attended college and became an elementary school teacher. When he came to California he continued with his education by attending East Los Angeles Community College where he graduated with high honors, obtaining an Associate’s Degree in Psychology and Sociology.
After obtaining his Associates Degree he became a Los Angeles County Case Worker where he assisted families in obtaining aid and Medi-Cal assistance. While working for the County of Los Angeles, Manuel dedicated 25 years to his local union, SEIU 660 (later became SEIU 721). Helping others and instilling family values in his children have been very important factors in Manuel’s involvement within his home, work, and community.
Despite his hard work and dedication to education, he has always found time to give back to the community. He was a member of the Huntington Park - Parks and Recreation Commission from 1990 to 2001 and appointed again in 2015. He served as the Chair of the Huntington Park - Parks and Recreation Commissioner from 2015-2016 and was able to lead the commission to make positive changes in our city parks.
Manuel also enjoys volunteering his time at St. Matthias Church. He was the Parish Council Treasurer from 1983 to 1988. He has also taken up other leadership roles with community organizations such as being President of the Huntington Park Lions Club from 1991 to 1993 and past President of the Huntington Park Friends of the Library. Manuel also values the importance of local business and was involved with the Greater Huntington Park Area, Friends of the Chamber, from 2001 to 2005.
Manuel and his family have dedicated their lives to Huntington Park and continue to give back to the community that has been their foundation for life, success, and happiness.
